Welcome to MarketDrive – My Journey Begins

Welcome to the first edition of MarketDrive, a weekly newsletter where I will be sharing my personal journey into the world of online marketing. I will talk openly about the highs, the lows, what I have tried, what worked, what failed, and what I am planning to try next.

Let me be clear right from the start: I am beginning this journey from scratch.

I have known about online marketing, especially affiliate marketing, for many years. I even dabbled a few times, only to realise quickly that success in this space requires a full commitment. It is not something that works well when done halfway.

This time, I am choosing the full commitment.

A little background about me: I have held senior roles in the corporate world for many years, including serving as Chief Operating Officer at a Fortune 500 company. I have a solid grasp of how businesses run, how to manage people, how to grow revenue, and how to lead teams.

But let me also confess something important. There is a huge difference between sitting in a boardroom and building an online business from the ground up.

To start, I made a list of my personal advantages and disadvantages. I am sharing it with you as a way of saying: if I can make this work, then so can you.

My Advantages

  • I was born before the internet existed, which means I learned Marketing 101 the traditional way. I studied the fundamentals long before the internet changed the landscape.
  • I have many years of corporate experience, giving me strong business acumen.
  • I come from a background in both sales and customer success, which I hope will be useful as this journey unfolds.
  • I have a good understanding of building websites, search engine optimisation (SEO), and pay-per-click advertising (PPC).
  • My senior role in my current job gives me the freedom to pursue personal projects and passions.
  • I have a stable primary income, which means I can afford to experiment and even fail without putting my livelihood at risk.

My Disadvantages

  • Because of my age… I cannot afford to fail. (Yes, that is both a pro and a con.)
  • I have always been involved in managing marketing efforts, not actually doing the hands-on work.
  • I am from the Facebook generation, so platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, and others feel unfamiliar and a bit intimidating.
  • I am naturally introverted and antisocial, so engaging on social media and especially appearing on video does not come easily.
  • I struggle with perfectionism and OCD. I tend to go all in or not at all, which can be both a strength and a setback.
  • I have very limited experience running an online business, so I expect the learning curve to be steep.
  • English is not my first language, so mistakes may, and almost certainly will, happen along the way.

So there you have it.

If I can figure this out, there is absolutely no reason why you cannot do the same. I invite you to follow along, learn from my mistakes, borrow from my wins, and perhaps find the inspiration to begin your own journey too.

Please subscribe for weekly updates, or feel free to email me directly with any questions, thoughts, or ideas. I would genuinely love to hear from you.

Until next week
